Tasting notes: Vinkara is one of the biggest and best producers of Turkey, with great strengths in producing and promoting the country’s native varieites. Located northeast of Ankara, Kalecik is a region famous in Turkey for its vineyards. The mountains make for a coolish microclimate in which KK thrives, and produces bouncy red wines of with bright, scented fruit. KK reminds us of a good Beaujolais, or southern French Pinot Noir.
In the hands of their Italian enologist, Marco Monchiero, Vinkara’s Kalecik Karasi is strikingly lively, supply and juicy. The climate here is continental, with cold winters, fresh springs and short but hot summers. In addition to Kalecik Karasi other native varieties, including Narince and Oküzgözü thrive, giving notably bright, fresh wines.
